PricePaid: 750 GBP (S/H) Purchased From: Used Model Year: 2008Features: [3] The Marshall 1974x is an 18 watt 1x12 combo. It has two channels - one with two inputs, volume and tone, the other is the same but has a tremolo circuit so there are speed and depth knobs too! Other than that, you just crank it up and go.
It's powered by EL34 valves, and has a vintage aged Celestion 20 watt 12" speaker.
It's physically quite big for a 1x12 but it's sturdily built. Sound: [10] I have to give this a low rating for its features, because it's got no channel changing, no reverb, no effects loop. The only amp with less on it is an Epiphone Valve Junior!
However, you buy this for the tone, not for complex circuitry. This amp delivers the classic Marshall plexi tone from the mid to late 60s, all at a useable volume for studio or small gigs.
Turn up the amp to as loud as you need it, and then just use the volume pot on your guitar. If you want a clean bell-like tone, back the volume right off. If you want a crunchy rock rhythm or lead tone, wind it up a bit. If you want Angus Young, put your short trousers on and stick your guitar on full volume and there you have it.
I've read other reviews where it's been described as a one-trick-pony, which in some ways it is, however it's such an amazing trick, do you care?
If you want clean tone at volume, it's no good. Reliability & Durability: [7] The Marshall transformers have a reputation for failing if you run this flat out night and day.
Mine has been upgraded with Mercury Magnetic transformers (not cheap, but an improvement in tone and reliability).
I've not had any problems although the valve protection cases sing a bit at volume - not a problem live but could be annoying in the studio. Overall Rating: [9] This is not a cheap amp. You will buy this because you want the tone it delivers and you won't be disappointed. |
