The Boss CS-3 is a Compressor Sustainer

It has four main controls:

Level - to control the overall level

Tone - As well as the advantage of being able to colour your sound much more it helps bring up any loss of treble you may lose using a compressor.

Attack - brings up the intesity of your picking - don't over do it though!

Sustain - Add extra sustain to your notes - lots of it! Cut this right back and the pedal acts as a limiter.

Sound: [7]
Using sustain gives your guitar more life.

If you are playing with overdrive or distortion it really brings the sound alive. If you play clean (especially country) one of these pedals is essential.

It can be a little noisey if you over do the effects especially on single coil guitars.

Reliability & Durability: [9]
Good, strong casing that you'd expect from a Boss pedal.

Not sure what the battery life is because I always power my pedals with a multi feed power adapter.

I've not yet had a problem with a Boss pedal.

Overall Rating: [8]
This is a good pedal and probably one of the most popular compressors. However, take your time playing with the settings as you can take it from that sweet spot to cheap and nasty very easily. However, the potential is there - just use your ears.

I have some multi effects units but I am moving away from them again and going back to individual pedals.
